Food Recovery

Food Recovery aims to rescue edible food from local supermarkets, cafes and restaurants. Rescued food will then provide healthy, nutritious meals and food parcels to community members across Far North Coast NSW.

About

The regional program ‘Food Recovery’ has been created to enhance availability of food assistance to individuals and families throughout the Far North Coast NSW.

Food Recovery Far North Coast is an initiative of the Consortium of Neighbourhood Centres – Far North Coast.

With the purchase of two refrigerated vans, thank you to the Environmental Trust funding as part of the NSW EPA’s Waste less, Recycle More initiative, food donations can now be collected and redistributed safely, to where it needs to go the most. Supporting already existing community meals, community kitchens, food banks and community pantries operating throughout the region. Rescued food is provided free to local community members in need through food parcels, community meals or frozen meals. The vans can also redistribute excess food to another location as identified.

Food Recovery can collect food donations and most importantly, divert it from landfill. It is all about being sustainable and thinking environmentally. Food waste is some of the largest proportion of waste going to landfill from both homes and business in NSW.

The project uses volunteers to collect and redistribute throughout the Northern Rivers. Please contact the above if you wish to be involved as a Volunteer

Free food through the Food Recovery program available in Community Pantry (bread, fruit, vegetables and other) can only be accessed with a purchase from Community Pantry. If you require free food without payment you will need to request Emergency Relief at MRNC reception.

Do you have a food business with food that could go to someone in need?

Now collecting from major supermarkets throughout the region every week day, Food Recovery aims to support even more supermarkets, restaurants and cafes that have current food wastage, by offering to be part of the solution.

If you operate a food business and have food that could be going to someone in need, please contact us!
